[New Interactive Tool] Why Do Pyrometers Read Low? Test Smoke, Sight-Glass & Small Target Effects Online with Our Real-Time IR-CZ Simulator

In high-temperature industrial processes (800°C and above)—such as steel forging, induction heating, melting furnaces, and advanced material sintering—engineers frequently face critical measurement issues: pyrometers reading 100°C+ lower than actual temperatures or fluctuating wildly when workpieces vibrate.

CHINO Corporation (Thailand) Ltd. (CCT) has officially launched the "IR-CZ Series Interactive Radiation Thermometer Simulator," allowing you to visually test optical physics and verify the optimal 2-Color thermometer for your line in 30 seconds.

■ 3 Physical Traps That Cause Standard Pyrometers to Read Low

While non-contact radiation thermometers offer ultra-fast response, standard 1-Color (single-wavelength) sensors suffer from severe measurement errors under real-world factory conditions. Our new simulator lets you experience these three phenomena firsthand:

Trap 1: Partial Spot Coverage (Target Smaller Than Spot / Misalignment) As measuring distance increases, the optical spot diameter expands (e.g., at L/D = 200, a 1,000mm distance creates a φ5.0mm spot). When measuring thin wires, small billets, or vibrating parts that do not completely fill the circular spot, a 1-color thermometer averages the cold background—causing the reading to plummet.

Trap 2: Optical Attenuation from Smoke, Steam, Dust & Wire Mesh Heavy smoke, oil mist, steam, or protective wire mesh shields block infrared energy. A 1-color sensor misinterprets this energy loss as a temperature drop. In contrast, CHINO's 2-Color Ratio Thermometers (IR-CZQ / IR-CZH) calculate the ratio between two wavelengths (0.9µm and 1.55µm), automatically canceling out optical attenuation and locking onto the true temperature—provided sufficient radiant energy is received, subject to surface condition.

Trap 3: Sight-Glass Absorption (Soda-Lime vs. Quartz Windows) Measuring through a furnace observation window requires strict wavelength selection. Standard long-wavelength sensors cannot see through glass—resulting in immediate Underflow (UFL) errors. Use "Step 7" in the simulator to test how short-wavelength models transmit cleanly through quartz or soda-lime sight ports.
